INFECTION CONTROL TEAMS RECEIVE AWARDS AT OXOID CELEBRATORY DINNER

The winners of the Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year Awards recently received their prizes at a celebratory dinner in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK.

Four teams – Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, UK (1^st prize £5,000), Sanatorio Adventista del Plata, Argentina (2^nd prize £1,000), Doncaster and Bassetlaw Foundation NHS Trust, UK (3^rd prize £500) and The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, UK (Highly Commended) were presented with their prizes by the Awards Judges and Patrick Roberts, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Oxoid Ltd. A further Highly Commended prize will be awarded locally later in the year to Juntendo University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

This is the second year of the Oxoid Infection Control Team of the Year Awards and the judges commented on how encouraged they were by the standard of entries. There were many examples of excellent practices and falling rates of infection from teams in all parts of the world including the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Serbia, Denmark, Cameroon, Java, India and Russia.

With the ongoing public fear, particularly in the Western world, of hospital-acquired infection the results given by many entrants prove that their work is contributing to reductions in infections such as MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Clostridium difficile and nosocomial pneumonia. But it was not just in the West that hospitals showed success in infection control. As the winning entries Argentina and Japan demonstrated, infection prevention and control is now a global subject, with teams from all over the world sharing their knowledge and best practice.
