Oxoid laboratory technician of the year award - Winners announced

Rachel Fletcher of Westward Laboratories, Callington, Cornwall , UK has been awarded with the £1000 first prize in the 2004/2005 Oxoid Laboratory Technician of the Year Award. As part of her prize Rachel also wins a trip to the 2006 International Association of Food Protection Meeting in Calgary , Alberta , Canada .

Facing tough competition from other entrants, the Awards’ Judges commented that Rachel had taken her promotion to Media Preparation Controller as a challenge and through her implementation of new systems and improvements to existing ones, had provided business efficiencies and cost reductions within a very short space of time. One of the judges also commented “You would want this lady to work for you”, which is one of the highest accolades as the judging panel consisted of acknowledged experts in food safety and hygiene including Alec Kyriakides (Head of Product Safety, Sainsbury’s Supermarkets), Roy Betts (Head of Mic rob iology, Campden and Chorleywood Food Research Association), Chris Bell (Independent Food Consultant and Author), Derrick Blunden (Editor, International Food Hygiene), David Long (Chairman of the British Beer and Pub Association).

Other winners were: 2^nd place: Muhammad Sabir Hussain, Qarshi Research International Ltd, 3^rd place: Kate Roberts, Youngs Bluecrest Seafoods.
