Oxoid Food Awards - Judges Special Award Winners Announced

Oxoid Ltd, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of culture media and diagnostic tests used within the food and beverage industry, is delighted to announce that Westward Laboratories, Callington, Cornwall, UK has been awarded the prestigious “Judges Special Award” in the 2005/2006 Oxoid Food Awards.

Westward Laboratories, who were the Oxoid Laboratory of the Year 2004/2005, continued to impress the judges in the 2005/2006 competition with their commitment to staff welfare and training and, ultimately, staff retention.

The achievements praised by the judges included the “Happy Campaign” designed to promote an open working environment allowing staff to put forward constructive ideas, give, and gain, praise and positive feedback, resolve issues quickly and improve channels of communication.

Westward also demonstrated a commitment to training for new staff, development of middle management and a comprehensive roll out of safety compliance training. In addition to training, the company has also looked at succession planning and gained the Investors in People Award.

“The management and staff at Westward Laboratories have demonstrated excellence in communication and commitment to the development of their colleagues” commented Cheryl Mooney, Food & Industrial Applications Manager at Oxoid Ltd and Chairman of the Judges.  “The comments from staff given at the Investors in People appraisal were testament to the success of the schemes implemented during 2005 and we are delighted to give our Judges Special Award to Westward Laboratories.”
