Oxoid drew crowds of clinical microbiologists to its booth at the 2009 European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) Congress, where delegates could find out about all the latest Oxoid products and take part in several competitions.
The easy use of Oxoid M.I.C.Evaluators™ (M.I.C.E.™) was clearly demonstrated to visitors by a simple but effect prize draw in which they were invited to peel open a specially adapted M.I.C.E. sachet to reveal whether or not they had won a prize. “M.I.C.E. strips combine the simplicity and ease of use of the diffusion method with the accuracy of an MIC test, to provide important information for the treatment of critically ill patients,” said Amanda Appleton, clinical applications manager, Oxoid. “This simple draw demonstrated the key benefits of the product by highlighting how the individually packaged strips are so easy to use, with many visitors commenting that they liked how the strip handle is revealed as the sachet is peeled apart.”
Visitors were also invited to learn more about the Xpect™ range of lateral flow tests (including the Xpect Flu A&B test), that give results in minutes, together with two new additions to the Brilliance™ Resistance Screening Agar range of chromogenic agars, which allow appropriate infection control and treatment to commence sooner for the best possible patient outcome. Brilliance ESBL Agar and Brilliance VRE Agar are used as screening tests to rapidly identify patients colonised with problematic Extended Spectrum ß-Lactamase (ESBL) producing organisms and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE), respectively.

In addition to the hundreds of winners in the M.I.C.E. draw, four delegates, from Portugal, Spain, Holland and Turkey, were each the lucky recipient of an i-Pod nano chromatic, the latest generation of Apple’s i-Pod nano, in the Oxoid daily prize draw. Each of the four i-Pods, in colours chosen to reflect the vibrant colours of the Oxoid Brilliance range of chromogenic media, was engraved with “OXOID Dedicated to Microbiology”.
A variety of scientific poster presentations on Oxoid products were also made at the Congress. If you were unable to attend ECCMID but would like further details of the scientific posters and latest Oxoid products, please speak to your local Oxoid representative or email val.kane@thermofisher.com
