FURAZOLIDONE DISCS
Code: DD0028
for the differentiation of micrococci and staphylococci
Contents
5 cartridges, each containing 50 discs (250 discs per pack)
Description
Furazolidone susceptibility testing is a reliable method for the differentiation of micrococci (which are resistant giving little or no zone of inhibition around the disc) and staphylococci (which are sensitive). In a study by John Baker1 100% of the micrococci tested were resistant, and 99.5% of the staphylococci were susceptible.
Technique
Prepare a suspension of the test organism equivalent to a 0.5 McFarland turbidity standard. Inoculate the suspension evenly onto a Mueller-Hinton agar plate (CM0337), apply the furazolidone disc and incubate at 35-37°C for 18-24 hours. After incubation micrococci will give a zone of <9mm and staphylococci will give zones ≥15mm.
Organism | Expected zone size |
Staphylococcus aureus ATCC® 25923* | 20 – 28mm |
Micrococcus spp. ATCC® 10240 | <9mm |
